In the spring a few of my friends (Rich So, Doris and Avery) did the Vancouver 100, which is the Baden Powell trail twice in one day. You can read Rich trip report here. I have no ambition to do anything that crazy, but I did need a goal to become in hiking shape for our Chilkoot trail trip at the end of August. I figured that completing the Baden Powell trail one section at the time would be doable for me and F over a summer. In the early summer Michelle and her son decided to join us as well. This is my report of our attempt.
Michelle, the kids and I hiked this part of the trail on July 6th. We started around 11 am and let the kids hike for a little bit. There were lots of berries along the trail especially huckleberries. We were a little less patient with the kids today as we knew we had a long day ahead of us, so they quickly ended up in the backpack, where they stayed for most of the hike up except for a few hiking sections and a long break. They demanded a lot of berry picking. Unfortunately they ahve become pretty good at spotting berries, so we can no longer just walk past a berry bush pretending we haven't seen it. On the way we took a little detour to check out Blue Gentian Lake, which was beautiful. Again F made sure to keep the bears away by talking/sing/yelling for most of the way. At the top we called a cab, so I could go back to pick up the car. We were pretty happy to finish this part of the trail as it was definitely one of the harder parts. Michelle's comment: Decent berries in early july at the cutblock area near craigmohr. The middle of this hike was the best, up until the lower hollyburn area, which becomes "skippable" again. I actually enjoyed the last section from cross country area to the downhill area. The trail is in poor condition, but if you like the very rugged trails and really big trees, that short end section is worth doing. Section 10 stats: Time on the trail incl. breaks: 6.5 hours F hiked: 2 km Total distance: 12 km Overall stats: F hiked: ~10.5 km Total distance: ~55 km | Section 1 stats: Time on Trail incl. breaks: 2 h 15 min F hiked: 500m Total distance: 1.9km x 2 = 3.8km Section 2 stats: Time on trail incl. breaks: 2 h 15 min. F hiked: 1.1 km Total distance: 1.9 km x 2 = 3.8km Section 3 stats: Time on the trail incl. breaks: 3 h F hiked: 500m Total distance: 2.1km x2 = 4.2 km |
